Integra Type S DE5

The Integra Type S is the Civic Type R's more luxurious twin: the same turbocharged K20C, a six-speed manual with rev-matching, a helical diff, dual-axis front struts and Brembo front brakes, in a wider five-door liftback body. It is a very capable track car out of the box. Like the Type R, its limits on track are front camber, tires and pad compound, and Acura's own track prototype shows where the factory cooling stops.

01On track

Strengths
  • +Dual-axis front suspension keeps torque steer low with 320 hp through the front wheels
  • +Helical LSD and wide 265-section tires give strong traction
  • +Brembo 4-piston front calipers on 13.8-inch two-piece rotors with cooling ducts
  • +Stiff body and adaptive dampers
Watch out for
  • −About 3,200 lb, which works the tires and brakes hard
  • −Only about -1.3° to -1.5° of front camber from the factory
  • −Factory Pilot Sport 4S is a street tire, not a track tire
  • −Expensive, so crash risk is costly

The vendor recommends the middle setting for a car that sees daily driving and occasional track days. We did not find a reputable DE5-specific rear track spec; leave the rear at factory settings and tune by tire temperatures.

Excellent street tire, but it will give up in long sessions on track.

Brake pads

A track compound in the DE5 Brembo fitment; Acura's One Lap of America car used Carbotech pads. Change front and rear together.

Brake fluid

Motul RBF 600 (312°C dry) or RBF 660 (328°C dry), or equivalent high-boiling DOT 4.

Factory: Brembo 4-piston monobloc fronts on 13.8-inch two-piece rotors and 12.0-inch rears, with front fascia ducts. [1,4,9]

04Known issues on track

Fix these before they find you.

  • Front camber

A vendor listing for offset lower ball joints (which fit the DE5 as well as the Civic Type R) says the factory gives about -1.3° to -1.5° front camber, and that the outside shoulder of the front tires rolls over on track. Owners report about -2.3° at the joint's middle setting and about -3.3° at maximum. [5]

  • Cooling headroom

Acura says the vented hood improves airflow by 170% and a wider lower opening feeds the intercooler. Acura's own Integra Type S HRC Prototype, built to show track parts, adds a larger intercooler and twin oil coolers. Watch oil and coolant temperatures in long sessions on hot days and add a cool-down lap. [1,3]

  • Pads, fluid and cage for serious use

When Acura engineers ran a near-stock Type S in One Lap of America, the only changes were a racing seat, roll cage, Carbotech brake pads and Red Line oil. That is a sensible template: a track pad and high-boiling fluid first, and harnesses only with a cage. [4]

05Modification roadmap

In the order that pays off.

  1. 0
    Safety & reliability first

    Safety and reliability first

    • Track pads and racing brake fluidThe first thing a fast Type S overwhelms.
    • Oil and coolant temperature monitoringAcura's own track prototype adds oil and intercooler capacity.
    • Seats and harnesses only with proper roll protectionNever fit harnesses without a roll bar or cage.
  2. 1
    Tires & alignment

    Tires and alignment

    • 200TW tiresBetter heat tolerance than the factory street tire.
    • Offset front camber jointsTakes front camber from about -1.4° to -2.3° or more.
  3. 2
    Suspension & brakes

    Suspension and balance

    • Adjustable rear bar, rear camber arms, coiloversThe hardware Acura's HRC Prototype uses for track balance.
  4. 3
    Power & aero

    Power last

    • Larger intercooler and oil cooling before any tuneKeep temperatures under control before adding power.

This car’s roadmap below starts with: Track pads and racing brake fluid · Oil and coolant temperature monitoring · Seats and harnesses only with proper roll protection · 200TW tires

Estimates from a simplified point-mass lap simulation of Integra Type S DE5 (3,220 lb, 320 hp) on a fictional circuit, with generic effects for each upgrade category. Good for comparing options on the same car, not for predicting your lap time. Real results depend on the driver, the exact parts, the track and the conditions. Durability starts lower on this car because of its known issues: heat.
