Veloster N JS

The Veloster N was Hyundai's first N car in North America and was developed largely at the Nürburgring. With the Performance Package it gets an electronic limited-slip differential and bigger brakes, and on track it feels sharp, direct and keen to put power down. The weak points for lapping are pads, oil temperature and front camber, all of which have well-trodden fixes.

2.0 L turbocharged inline-four (Theta II T-GDi), 6-speed manual; 8-speed wet DCT from 2020

01On track

Strengths
  • +Sharp, direct steering and an eLSD (Performance Package) that pulls the car out of tight corners
  • +Rev-matching, shift light and adjustable drive modes that suit learning drivers
  • +Strong mid-range torque from the 2.0 turbo
  • +Large i30 N / Kona N parts and owner knowledge base
Watch out for
  • −Single-piston floating calipers; the factory street pads fade quickly
  • −Very stiff in N mode on bumpy circuits
  • −Oil temperatures climb in long sessions and hot weather
  • −Limited factory front camber

SPL rear upper camber arms give a wider range of rear camber for lowered cars and performance alignments. No published Veloster N track target was found; set camber from front tire temperatures.

Hot pressure target
34–36 psi hot as a first target on 200TW tires

Tire Rack found most 200TW and streetable track tires fastest at 34–36 psi hot (tested on a rear-drive car); its older competition chart for front-heavy FWD/AWD cars starts higher, at 40–45 psi front and 30–40 psi rear. Adjust in 2 psi steps. While front camber is still limited, err toward the higher end so the front sidewalls do not roll over. [14,15] Work out your cold pressure →

The RE-71RS was the benchmark of the 2025 Tire Rack 200TW testing, with the Falken and Yokohama close behind on lap time in third-party summaries of that data; the RE-71RZ is its successor.

Brake pads

Owners of the related i30 N run Pagid RSL29 with DBA T3 4000 discs for serious track use and Ferodo DS2500 for daily driving with light track days. Owner reports say Brembo-brand replacement pads and discs did not survive track use. Confirm fitment for your Veloster N calipers.

Brake fluid

High-boiling DOT 4 racing fluid such as Motul RBF 660, which i30 N owners pair with braided lines; bleed before every event.

Owner consensus from the i30 N, which shares the engine and a similar-size brake package. Bed new pads properly; one owner glazed DS2500s on track and needed to sand them. [7,16]

04Known issues on track

Fix these before they find you.

  • Connecting rod bearings (2019)

Hyundai bulletin 22-EM-002H extended long-block engine coverage to 10 years or 120,000 miles for damage from connecting rod bearing wear on certain 2019 Veloster N cars, with a bearing clearance test procedure. Check the VIN with a dealer and keep the records. [4]

  • Oil temperature

Forge, which sells a bolt-on oil cooler for the Veloster N, says oil temperatures can climb to dangerous levels on track or in hot climates. That is a vendor claim with no published numbers, but one Elantra N owner reports about 130°C oil after a few laps before fitting the same brand of cooler and about 110°C after. Fit an oil temperature gauge and treat sustained high readings as a reason to add a cooler. [5,6]

  • Brake fade with street pads

Performance Package cars use 13.6-inch front and 12.4-inch rear rotors with single-piston floating calipers; Hyundai offered higher-performance pads as a dealer accessory. On the closely related i30 N, owners report street pads fade badly on fast circuits and favour Pagid RSL29 with DBA T3 4000 discs for regular track use, warning that more aggressive pads overheat the stock-size discs. Some keep a spare pair of front discs because they can crack under heavy use. [1,7]

  • Clutch, wastegate rattle and recalls

ThreePiece reports manual clutches slipping around 40,000 miles on hard-driven cars and turbo wastegate rattle after about 30,000 miles, often covered under warranty if caught early. Both are vendor estimates. Check that recalls are complete before you buy or track the car. [10]

  • Warranty and track use

Hyundai runs a track-day warranty in some markets, but the New Zealand terms, for example, cover only the i20 N, Kona N and i30 N, exclude racing, and void cover on non-OEM tires, pads, rotors and suspension. Do not assume your Veloster N warranty covers track damage; check the terms for your market. [11]

05Modification roadmap

In the order that pays off.

  1. 0
    Safety & reliability first

    Safety and reliability first

    • Track pads and racing brake fluidThe factory street pads are the first thing to fade.
    • Oil temperature gauge, then an oil cooler if neededOil heat is the main engine risk in long sessions.
    • Rod bearing bulletin and recall check (2019 cars)Confirm the TSB inspection has been done and keep the paperwork.
    • Seats and harnesses only with proper roll protectionNever fit harnesses without a roll bar or cage.
  2. 1
    Tires & alignment

    Tires and alignment

    • 18-inch wheels with 200TW tiresCheaper tires, more choice and more sidewall than the stock 19s.
    • Front camber boltsThe cheapest way to add front camber and save the tire shoulders.
  3. 2
    Suspension & brakes

    Suspension

    • Adjustable rear upper camber armsCorrect rear camber after lowering and tune balance.
    • Upgraded discs with a matched track padOwners find the disc, not just the pad, becomes the limit.
  4. 3
    Power & aero

    Power last

    • Tune and intakeOnly after oil temperatures and brakes are under control.

This car’s roadmap below starts with: Track pads and racing brake fluid · Oil temperature gauge, then an oil cooler if needed · Rod bearing bulletin and recall check (2019 cars) · Seats and harnesses only with proper roll protection

Estimates from a simplified point-mass lap simulation of Veloster N JS (3,101 lb, 250 hp) on a fictional circuit, with generic effects for each upgrade category. Good for comparing options on the same car, not for predicting your lap time. Real results depend on the driver, the exact parts, the track and the conditions. Durability starts lower on this car because of its known issues: heat, brake fade.
