These are starting points gathered from the sources listed at the bottom, not a guarantee. Cars, tires and parts vary: have a reputable alignment shop set your car, check factory specs for road use, and change one thing at a time.
01On track
- +Mid-engine balance: rotates willingly on trail-brake without the rear-engine pendulum of a 911
- +Excellent steering feel and brake modulation for building a novice into an intermediate driver
- +Responds well to small changes in camber, toe and bar settings, so it teaches setup
- +Huge aftermarket for alignment, cooling and oil-control parts
- −Very little stock front camber adjustment, so outside shoulders wear fast on sticky tires
- −987.1 M97 engines need oil-control and inspection work before regular track use
- −Lift-off rotation can arrive quickly once the car is lowered and stiffened, especially with too little rear toe-in
- −Base 2.7 cars are short on power for faster tracks; the gain from an S is mostly engine, not chassis
02Alignment
Where to start the alignment.
No Cayman-specific figure was found; these windows come from a 2026 Tire Rack study of 14 track tires, where most streetable tires were fastest at 34–36 psi hot and R-compounds at 30–32 psi. Start a few psi below target cold, check immediately after a hard lap and bleed in the hot pits. [13] Work out your cold pressure →

A dedicated track compound once you leave the novice group; mild street/track pads (for example Hawk HPS) are only enough for a few beginner days
High-boiling racing DOT 4 such as Motul RBF 600 (312°C dry / 205°C wet), flushed before every event season
Owner consensus is that track pads plus fresh fluid come first, and cooling and oil-control upgrades follow if you drive hard on sticky tires. [18,19,20]
04Known issues on track
Fix these before they find you.
IMS bearing (987.1 only)
The 2005–2008 M97 engines use the larger, non-serviceable intermediate-shaft bearing. Its failure rate is much lower than the earlier small-bearing engines, but specialists say it is not zero, so know its history before you commit to track days. The 9A1 engine used from the 987.2 onward has no IMS bearing at all. [1,2]
Bore scoring (mainly 987.1 3.4 S)
Cylinder scoring affects a minority of M97 engines, with the 3.4 more commonly reported than the 2.7. Rising oil consumption, smoke or a cold-start tapping noise are the warning signs; a borescope inspection before purchase is the standard advice. [1,2]
Oil starvation under sustained cornering (987.1)
On 200-treadwear or stickier tires the stock M96/M97 sump can uncover the pickup in long, high-g corners. LN Engineering positions a deeper, baffled sump with a pickup extension as a must for tracked 1997–2008 engines; an accumulator can be added on top, not instead. [3,4]
Heat management on 987.2 / 981 (9A1)
For hot climates and long sessions, a center (third) radiator kit built from factory parts is the usual coolant-temperature fix on the 981, and a 9A1-specific deep sump is claimed by its maker to drop track oil temps by up to 40°F. Watch both gauges in your first summer sessions before deciding. [5,6]
Coolant reservoir cracks (981)
A small crack in the coolant expansion tank is a common 981 complaint. Look for dried coolant residue or a slowly dropping level and fix it before a track weekend, because a hot pressurized leak only gets worse. [7]
05Modification roadmap
In the order that pays off.
- 0Safety & reliability first
Safety and engine protection
- Pre-purchase borescope and IMS history (987.1)Bore scoring and IMS failures are the platform's expensive surprises.
- Deep, baffled sump (987.1 essential, 9A1 optional)Stops oil starvation in long, high-g corners on sticky tires.
- Track pads and high-boiling fluidStock pads and old fluid are the first things to give up.
- Coolant tank check and fresh coolantCracked 981 tanks and old coolant end track days early.
- 1Tires & alignment
Tires and alignment
- Camber plates or lower-arm shimsUnlocks enough front camber to save the outside shoulders.
- 200TW tire on the factory staggered sizesThe biggest single lap-time gain per dollar.
- 2Suspension & brakes
Suspension and cooling
- Adjustable rear toe linksHolds rear toe-in once rear camber is increased.
- Quality coilovers and adjustable barsControls roll and lets you tune the mid-engine balance.
- Center radiator (981) or added oil coolingKeeps temperatures stable in hot, long sessions.
- 3Power & aero
Power last
- Exhaust / intake and tuningOnly once the car stops, turns and stays cool; the chassis is the reason to own one.

Estimates from a simplified point-mass lap simulation of Cayman / Boxster 987.1, 987.2 and 981 (non-GT) (2,901 lb, 245 hp) on a fictional circuit, with generic effects for each upgrade category. Good for comparing options on the same car, not for predicting your lap time. Real results depend on the driver, the exact parts, the track and the conditions. Durability starts lower on this car because of its known issues: oil starvation, heat.
