M3 / M4 F80
- Engine
- 3.0 L twin-turbo inline-six (S55)
- Power
- 425 hp (base cars)
- Weight
- ≈3,300 lb (BMW figure for the M4 coupe; US-spec cars weigh more)
- Layout
- Front-engine
- Drive
- RWD
These are starting points gathered from the sources listed at the bottom, not a guarantee. Cars, tires and parts vary: have a reputable alignment shop set your car, check factory specs for road use, and change one thing at a time.
01On track
- +Huge mid-range torque makes them very fast between corners
- +Good weight distribution and a long wheelbase give high-speed stability
- +Track-rated factory cooling package for engine, turbos and transmission
- +Responds strongly to camber plates, rear toe arms and solid bushings
- −Factory setup understeers, and the front camber cannot be adjusted
- −Factory rear adjusters force a trade-off between camber and toe
- −Turbo torque punishes rear tires and makes throttle discipline essential
- −Plastic charge cooler and the crank hub are known concerns on tuned cars
02Alignment
Where to start the alignment.
| Front | Rear | |
|---|---|---|
| Camber | -3.0° to -3.5° | -2.0° to -3.0° |
| Toe | About 1/8" total toe-out | About 1/8" total toe-in |
BimmerWorld's baseline for a closely related F-chassis 435i (not an M car) was -3.5° front with 1/8" total toe-out and -3° rear with 1/8" total toe-in. One owner of an F80 on slicks (owner report) runs about -3.4° to -3.5° front, -2.1° rear, 1.0 mm toe-out per side at the front and 0.6–0.8 mm toe-in per side at the rear. Apex says 295/30-18 tires need at least -3° front. Reaching these rear numbers needs adjustable toe arms, and more rear camber needs adjustable camber arms.

Pagid RS29 (medium friction, fade-resistant, smooth release) is a common step up from stock pads. BimmerWorld lists Performance Friction 08/11 and Carbotech XP-series race pads; R44 Performance runs EBC RP-X track pads on its F80. Check fitment for your caliper (iron rotors only for Pagid RS).
Castrol SRF (518°F wet boiling point) or Motul RBF 600/660 (about 400°F wet); use normal-viscosity fluid on track.
Upgrade front and rear together to keep brake balance. Carbon-ceramic brakes need pads made for them. [2,11,12]
04Known issues on track
Fix these before they find you.
Crank hub
The S55 crank hub can spin, letting the timing slip, which is why many owners fit a hub kit before tuning. R44 Performance puts the rate at under 5% of S55 engines and installs a hub kit as a precaution before adding power. On a stock car, it is a risk to weigh; on a tuned track car, most specialists fit the kit. [2]
Charge cooler and cooling
R44 Performance's F80 had its plastic charge cooler fail and let water into the engine, which needed replacing. Their rebuilt track car runs an aluminum charge cooler plus an uprated heat exchanger, DCT oil cooler and engine oil cooler. BMW fitted a track-specification cooling system from the factory, but sustained hot-weather sessions and tuning push it hard; watch oil and coolant temperatures and plan cool-down laps. [1,2]
Rear geometry adjustment limits
The factory rear uses an eccentric bolt and washer, and BimmerWorld says you can get the camber you want or the toe you want, but not both. Lowering springs also change rear toe. Adjustable rear toe arms (with a lockout kit for the eccentric) solve it. [3,6]
05Modification roadmap
In the order that pays off.
- 0Safety & reliability first
Safety and reliability first
- Crank hub kit (especially before any tune)A spun hub can destroy the engine; the kit is cheap by comparison.
- Aluminum charge cooler and oil temperature monitoringThe plastic part can fail and let water into the engine; heat management decides how long your sessions can be.
- Track pads, high-boiling fluid and brake ductsHigh speeds and weight overwhelm street pads.
- Seats and harnesses only with proper roll protectionHarnesses without a roll bar or half cage are dangerous in a rollover.
- 1Tires & alignment
Tires and alignment
- Square 18x10" wheels with 275/35-18 200TW tiresReduces the factory understeer and allows tire rotation.
- Front camber platesThe front has no factory camber adjustment; plates are the biggest single handling gain.
- Adjustable rear toe armsLets you set rear camber and toe independently.
- 2Suspension & brakes
Suspension
- Solid front control arm bushesStop the front toe changing under heavy braking, sharpening steering at the limit.
- Adjustable drop links and anti-roll barsRestore link geometry after lowering and control body roll.
- Coilovers, then rear camber and traction armsFor sticky tires, more rear camber and traction keeps the rear in balance with the front.
- 3Power & aero
Power last
- TuneEasy power, but only after the hub, cooling, brakes and chassis can handle it.

Pick upgrades and see the estimated lap-time change on a reference circuit, how much margin your brakes and engine have late in a session, and which changes buy durability rather than speed.

Estimates from a simplified point-mass lap simulation of M3 / M4 F80 / F82 (3,301 lb, 425 hp) on a fictional circuit, with generic effects for each upgrade category. Good for comparing options on the same car, not for predicting your lap time. Real results depend on the driver, the exact parts, the track and the conditions. Durability starts lower on this car because of its known issues: heat.
