These are starting points gathered from the sources listed at the bottom, not a guarantee. Cars, tires and parts vary: have a reputable alignment shop set your car, check factory specs for road use, and change one thing at a time.
01On track
- +Light for a V8 car (a Fox 5.0 hatch starts under 3,000 lb) with plenty of torque
- +Huge, mature aftermarket for chassis, suspension and brakes, much of it developed for road racing
- +Simple and cheap to repair, with spec racing classes built around it
- +Responds well to more caster and camber once adjustable plates are fitted
- −The unibody flexes a lot, so suspension upgrades do little until it is stiffened
- −Stock front camber and caster range is very small
- −Small stock brakes on Fox cars, and the SN95 Cobra brake swap needs SN95 spindles
- −Stock oil pan is not designed for long, high-g corners
- −Solid-axle cars cannot adjust rear camber or toe
02Alignment
Where to start the alignment.
| Front | Rear | |
|---|---|---|
| Camber | about -2.5° (MM autocross example), more for track tires | fixed (solid axle); factory on IRS Cobras |
| Toe | slight toe-out | fixed (solid axle) |
| Caster | +4° to +6° (vendor guidance) | — |
Maximum Motorsports gives no hard road-course numbers and says track alignment is often trial and error. Its direction: more negative camber, more positive caster, and toe-out rather than toe-in. A vendor video suggests 4–6° of positive caster; the stock car has little. Every camber change moves toe, so re-set toe after. Big caster settings affect bumpsteer.
Tire Rack found most 200TW tires fastest around 34–36 psi hot. Hoosier's chart is for its race radials; never bleed hot pressures back down to cold set points. [17,14] Work out your cold pressure →

1979–90: 17x8 with 245/45-17 clears without rubbing; 1991–93: 17x9 with up to 275/40-17 may fit the front; about 6" backspacing on a 9" wheel. Rear 17x10.5 with 315/35-17 needs the quad shocks removed and fender work.Tire Rack called the RE-71RS the near-untouchable benchmark of its 2025 200TW track testing; third-party summaries of Tire Rack data put the A052 and RT660+ close behind. LMR stresses every Fox car differs; owners use steering-rack limiters to stop full-lock rubbing.

A real track compound in front (owners report Hawk HPS-class pads only work for light lapping); match the rear compound. Upgrade path: SN95 Cobra 13 inch fronts with Cobra rear discs.
Motul RBF 600 / RBF 660 or similar high-boiling DOT 4 racing fluid; bleed before every event.
Braided lines and brake cooling ducts are cheap first steps. Do not run drilled rotors on track. Keep front-to-rear balance in mind when changing rotor sizes. [3,8,18]
04Known issues on track
Fix these before they find you.
Chassis flex and floor cracking
Maximum Motorsports describes the 1979–2004 unibody as twisting under load, which changes the alignment mid-corner and wastes spring and damper upgrades. Even near-stock cars can crack the floorpan near the front seat mounts under hard cornering. Full-length subframe connectors with seat-mount braces are its first priority, followed by a strut tower brace and a lower K-member brace. [2]
Oil starvation in long corners
Canton sells a baffled road-race T-sump pan for the 1979–95 5.0 specifically to prevent oil starvation on road courses (vendor claim). It holds about 7 quarts, needs its own pickup, and may need changes with long-tube headers. Treat a stock pan and long sweepers on sticky tires as a risk, and keep the oil level at the full mark. [6]
Small brakes and brake fade
Owners report stock Fox brakes surviving 20-minute sessions with good pads, fresh fluid and braided lines, but drilled rotors cracking and the combined hub/rotor shedding heat poorly. The usual upgrade is the SN95 Cobra front brake (13 inch rotors versus about 11 inch on SN95 GTs), which needs SN95 spindles, a 5-lug conversion and 17 inch or larger wheels (owner consensus). [8,9]
Brake balance and spindle swaps
Maximum Motorsports says a 13 inch front kit on a Fox needs rear discs first, and recommends the 11.65 inch Cobra rear rotor; the 10.5 inch rotor gives about 10% less rear torque and overworks the fronts. Do not fit 1996–04 spindles to a 1979–95 car with a stock-geometry K-member: the steering arm sits about 26 mm lower and causes severe bumpsteer. [3,4]
C-clip rear axles
The 8.8 inch axle uses C-clips to retain the axle shafts; if a clip breaks or comes out, the shaft and wheel can leave the housing. Eliminator kits exist, but many are race-only or not for factory disc-brake cars, so check fitment carefully before buying. [12]
05Modification roadmap
In the order that pays off.
- 0Safety & reliability first
Safety and reliability first
- Full-length subframe connectorsStops the floor cracking and lets the suspension work. The most important chassis part for these cars.
- Track pads, racing fluid, braided lines and ductsThe stock brakes are small and heat up fast.
- Road-race baffled oil panProtects against oil starvation in long corners on sticky tires.
- Roll bar before harnessesNever fit harnesses without a roll bar or cage. A bar also stiffens the chassis.
- Inspect axle, bushings and ball jointsThese cars are old; worn parts and C-clip axles deserve a look before the first event.
- 1Tires & alignment
Tires and alignment
- Caster/camber platesThe stock mounts give almost no adjustment and no caster.
- 17" wheels with 200TW tiresMore grip and room for bigger brakes later.
- 2Suspension & brakes
Chassis and suspension
- Strut tower brace and K-member braceKeeps the front geometry stable under braking and cornering.
- Springs, dampers and rear axle locationMaximum Motorsports offers Panhard bar and torque-arm rear setups to tame the four-link; check your class rules first.
- SN95 Cobra brakes (Fox cars)Bigger rotors; plan spindles, 5-lug and wheels together.
- 3Power & aero
Power last
- Power after brakes and chassisPower is cheap on these cars; stopping and keeping the floor intact are not.

Estimates from a simplified point-mass lap simulation of Mustang 5.0 / GT / Cobra Fox / SN95 (2,801 lb, 205 hp) on a fictional circuit, with generic effects for each upgrade category. Good for comparing options on the same car, not for predicting your lap time. Real results depend on the driver, the exact parts, the track and the conditions. Durability starts lower on this car because of its known issues: oil starvation, brake fade.
