Mustang GT / Boss 302 S197

The Coyote-era S197 is a heavy, honest, solid-axle track car: front struts, a three-link live axle located by a Panhard bar, and a rev-happy 5.0. The Boss 302 and the 2013 GT Track Package added the radiator, engine oil cooler, Torsen differential and Brembo brakes that a plain GT lacks. Set up properly it is stable, predictable and cheap to run.

01On track

Strengths
  • +Coyote V8 makes strong power to a high redline
  • +Simple, robust live axle: predictable and easy to tune
  • +Boss 302 and Track Package cars arrive with Brembos, Torsen diff and extra cooling
  • +Large aftermarket from established Mustang suspension shops
Watch out for
  • −Weight: brakes and front tires work hard
  • −Stock strut tops give no camber or caster adjustment
  • −Rubber-bushed Panhard bar lets the axle move laterally, hurting stability
  • −Live axle is less compliant than independent rear suspension over bumps

02Alignment

Where to start the alignment.

No reputable shop publishes a single S197 number. Maximum Motorsports recommends more negative camber and positive caster for track use, toe-out rather than toe-in for open-track or autocross, and settings developed by trial and error. Their 2011–14 plates offer 1.6° of continuous camber and 0.7° of caster adjustment.

Hoosier asks for about -3° camber on its DOT radials, which on an S197 means camber plates.

Brake pads

Dedicated track compound; Vorshlag stocks G-LOC pads for the 14-inch Brembo, non-Brembo GT and rear calipers, including endurance compounds

Brake fluid

Add brake inlet cooling ducts; Ford Racing front brake ducts were standard on the Boss 302 Laguna Seca. [2,3]

04Known issues on track

Fix these before they find you.

  • Brakes on the plain GT

Non-Brembo GTs are the weak point; 2011+ GTs offered an optional 14-inch Brembo package and the 2013 Track Package included full Brembos. Specialist shops stock track pads for both caliper types and sell brake inlet cooling kits for 2013–14 GT/Boss 302 and earlier GTs. [2,3]

  • Engine and differential cooling

The Boss 302 radiator and engine oil cooler came on the 2013 GT Track Package with a 3.73 Torsen differential. A GT without those parts should be watched closely for oil temperature in long sessions; adding the Boss-spec cooling hardware is the logical fix. [2]

  • Panhard bar bushings and axle location

Maximum Motorsports notes the stock S197 Panhard bar has rubber end bushings that deflect enough to affect stability. A precision adjustable Panhard bar keeps the axle centered while the control arm bushings keep some compliance. [4]

  • Front strut mounts and camber

Stock upper mounts are rubber with no adjustment, and lowering adds negative camber. Camber/caster plates are the fix; Maximum Motorsports discourages crash bolts and notes Ford upgraded the strut-to-spindle bolts in 2010. Recheck toe after any camber change. [1,5]

05Modification roadmap

In the order that pays off.

  1. 0
    Safety & reliability first

    Safety and reliability first

    • High-boiling fluid, track pads and brake ductsHeavy car, hard on brakes.
    • Engine oil cooler and upgraded radiator on cars without Track Package/Boss hardwareKeeps the Coyote in its comfortable temperature range.
  2. 1
    Tires & alignment

    Tires and alignment

    • Caster/camber platesThe only practical way to get track camber at the front.
    • 200TW endurance tiresLarge, consistent grip gain.
  3. 2
    Suspension & brakes

    Suspension

    • Adjustable Panhard barLocates the axle precisely and improves stability.
    • Better dampers and springsControls the weight and lets you run more camber.
  4. 3
    Power & aero

    Power last

    • Power only after brakes and cooling are provenThe Coyote already outpaces the stock brakes and tires.

Estimates from a simplified point-mass lap simulation of Mustang GT / Boss 302 S197 (3,631 lb, 412 hp) on a fictional circuit, with generic effects for each upgrade category. Good for comparing options on the same car, not for predicting your lap time. Real results depend on the driver, the exact parts, the track and the conditions. Durability starts lower on this car because of its known issues: heat.
