Mustang GT Performance Pack / Dark Horse S650

The S650 is a heavily updated S550 with a stronger Coyote V8. The GT Performance Pack adds a Torsen limited-slip diff, six-piston Brembo fronts, stiffer front springs, bigger bars and 19-inch staggered summer tires, and the Dark Horse goes further with 500 hp and a Tremec manual. Treat it like the S550: a heavy, stable car whose first limits are front camber, brake heat and tires.

01On track

Strengths
  • +Strong, high-revving V8 with a Torsen diff on Performance Pack cars
  • +Six-piston front / four-piston rear Brembos with good pedal feel (road test)
  • +Quicker 15.5:1 steering ratio than the S550
  • +Shares much of the S550 aftermarket (bars, dampers), and track pads already exist
Watch out for
  • −Close to 4,000 lb, so brakes and front tires are consumables
  • −Steering is soft and muted on centre at speed (road test)
  • −Front camber is limited by the stock strut tops
  • −Platform is new: published track alignment and cooling data are still thin

Hot pressure target
about 34–36 psi hot on 200TW tires; Hoosier DOT radials 40–42+ psi hot from 30–34 psi cold

Tire Rack found most 200TW tires fastest around 34–36 psi hot; the Hoosier figures are its chart for cars over 3,000 lb. [9,5] Work out your cold pressure →

Brake pads

Dedicated track compound, e.g. G-LOC pads for the Performance Pack / Dark Horse six-piston fronts and four-piston rears (separate part for the base GT)

Brake fluid

Motul RBF 600 / RBF 660

Bleed before every event. Add brake ducting if pads or fluid are getting cooked. [3,8]

04Known issues on track

Fix these before they find you.

  • Brakes and pads

A road test found the Performance Pack Brembos strong and consistent after miles of hard driving in high heat, but that was on the street. On track a near-4,000 lb car eats pads and fluid. Vorshlag already stocks G-LOC track pads for the base GT and the Performance Pack / Dark Horse six-piston calipers. Fit racing fluid and track pads before the first event. [2,3,8]

  • Front camber and tire shoulders

As on the S550, the stock strut tops leave little front camber for track tires, which wears the outer shoulders. No S650-specific camber plate range was found in our sources; check with your parts vendor for an S650 fitment rather than assuming S550 parts fit. [4,5]

  • Know what your car has

Final drive, transmission and suspension vary by trim: the Performance Pack changes the final drive (3.73 manual / 3.55 auto), and the Dark Horse gets a Tremec manual. Optional MagneRide dampers were not on the road-test cars. Confirm your build before planning parts. [1,2]
