Mustang Shelby GT500 S550

The GT500 is the heaviest and most powerful car in the S550 family: 760 hp, a dual-clutch gearbox and magnetic dampers. Reviewers found it calm and composed on track, much more forgiving than earlier GT500s, with ample cooling. Its weight shows up in the braking zones, so brake fluid, pads and tires are the running costs.

01On track

Strengths
  • +Huge power with a quick-shifting DCT that picks gears well in Track mode (road test)
  • +Composed, forgiving chassis with magnetic dampers
  • +Big Brembo brakes with 16.5-inch solid front discs
  • +Carbon Fiber Track Pack adds carbon wheels, Cup 2 tires, a big wing and rear seat delete
Watch out for
  • −About 4,200 lb, which you feel in every braking zone from high speed
  • −No manual gearbox
  • −Brakes, fluid and tires are expensive consumables
  • −Front camber is limited without the Handling Package or plates

Qualitative only. The Handling Package top mounts add front adjustment; Vorshlag offers its S550 plates (about 2.5° added camber) with a "GT350/R or GT500" strut option, so confirm fitment with them first.

Hot pressure target
about 34–36 psi hot on 200TW tires; Hoosier DOT radials 40–42+ psi hot from 30–34 psi cold

Tire Rack found most 200TW tires fastest around 34–36 psi hot. For Cup 2 tires follow Michelin's track guidance. [11,7] Work out your cold pressure →

Tire Rack called the RE-71RS the near-untouchable benchmark of its 2025 200TW track testing; third-party summaries of Tire Rack data put the A052 and RT660+ close behind. A 200TW tire is cheaper and lasts longer than a Cup 2 for lapping.

Brake pads

Dedicated track compound; Vorshlag lists G-LOC pads for the 2020-up GT500 six-piston fronts and four-piston rears

Brake fluid

Motul RBF 600 / RBF 660 or similar high-temperature racing fluid

Bleed before every event; the stock fluid is the first thing to go. [1,5,10]

04Known issues on track

Fix these before they find you.

  • Brake heat

The Drive found the Brembos very capable but unable to hide the car's mass when slowing from triple-digit speeds, and recommended high-temperature racing fluid for track use to avoid fade. Ford told Jalopnik it chose solid (not drilled) front discs because they wore least in testing. [1,3]

  • Cooling

Ford widened the grille openings to stop overheating, and The Drive saw what looked like ample cooling on track. Still, log temperatures on hot days and keep the heat exchangers clean. [1,3]

  • Know your package

The $1,500 Handling Package adds adjustable strut top mounts, an oil catch can, a Gurney flap, splitter wickers and dive planes. The Carbon Fiber Track Pack adds carbon wheels, Cup 2 tires, Recaros, the large wing and a rear seat delete. Cars without them need aftermarket camber correction. [1,4]

This car’s roadmap below starts with: Racing brake fluid and track pads · Log oil, coolant and transmission temperatures · Harnesses only with roll protection · Front camber (Handling Package mounts or plates)

Estimates from a simplified point-mass lap simulation of Mustang Shelby GT500 S550 (4,171 lb, 760 hp) on a fictional circuit, with generic effects for each upgrade category. Good for comparing options on the same car, not for predicting your lap time. Real results depend on the driver, the exact parts, the track and the conditions. Durability starts lower on this car because of its known issues: heat, brake fade.
