These are starting points gathered from the sources listed at the bottom, not a guarantee. Cars, tires and parts vary: have a reputable alignment shop set your car, check factory specs for road use, and change one thing at a time.
01On track
- +Very light for a modern car, with near 50/50 weight distribution
- +ND2 engine revs to 7,500 rpm and makes the car properly quick for its class
- +Huge factory and aftermarket support, including the Global MX-5 Cup car
- +2024-on Club models add an asymmetric limited-slip and a DSC-Track mode
- −Limited factory camber (about -1.5°) and poor factory alignments on new cars
- −Soft stock springs and a lot of body roll
- −Small cabin: tall drivers struggle with helmet clearance under a roll bar
- −Early 2016–17 manual gearboxes had a known 2nd/3rd gear problem

A coilover supplier's published track setting, not an independent shop recommendation, so treat it as a starting point. It needs offset bushings or other camber hardware. No Good-Win Racing, 949 Racing or MX-5 Cup alignment sheet could be verified.

215/40R17 on the MX-5 Cup car
Flyin' Miata's caliper kits ship with Porterfield R4S for street, autocross and light track; for their Powerlite calipers they use BP-20 as a street/track front pad and BP-40 on their track cars. The Global MX-5 Cup car runs Brembo racing calipers with race pads.
High-boiling DOT 4; compare dry and wet boiling points and change it more often for track use. Specific brands were not verified for this guide.
Larger-rotor kits for faster tracks; Brembo front brakes are a factory option on 2024-on Club models. [4,11,12,13]
04Known issues on track
Fix these before they find you.
Early six-speed manual (2016–17)
Mazda issued a service bulletin for 2016–17 soft tops built before September 2016: grinding on 1–2 or 2–3 shifts, or 2nd/3rd refusing to engage, caused by gear damage under rapid, repeated shifting. The fix was revised 2nd/3rd gears; later gearboxes carry the change. If you buy an early car, confirm the transmission was updated before tracking it. [7]
Oil temperature
Flyin' Miata notes ND oil can get hot under hard use and that the car has no factory oil temperature sensor, so fit a gauge. As a general Miata rule, oil is happiest around 180–220°F, thins above about 250°F and risks damage from about 280°F. FM's ND cooler kit needs a different install kit on 2019-on cars, which already have a stock cooler that is removed. [8,10]
Roll protection and helmet clearance
Open cars generally need a fixed roll bar and a passing "broomstick" line from the bar to the windshield top; some organizers ask for extra clearance. The ND's small cabin makes this hard for taller drivers, so test with your helmet on before committing to a bar. [14,15]
Brakes on fast tracks
Flyin' Miata pitches caliper-only upgrades for street, autocross and lower-speed tracks and larger-rotor kits for faster tracks. From 2024, Mazda also offers Brembo front brakes on Club models. [4,12]
Brake fluid
Use a high-boiling DOT 4 and change it more often than once a year when you track the car. [13]
05Modification roadmap
In the order that pays off.
- 0Safety & reliability first
Safety and reliability first
- Confirm the gearbox update on 2016–17 manualsAvoids a known 2nd/3rd gear failure.
- Roll bar that passes your organizer's clearance testRequired by most clubs for open cars; the small cabin makes fit critical.
- Oil temperature gauge, then an oil coolerThe car has no factory oil temperature reading.
- Track pads and fresh high-boiling fluidCheap insurance against fade.
- 1Tires & alignment
Tires and alignment
- Proper alignment, then offset camber bushingsFactory alignments vary and stock camber runs out at about -1.5°.
- 200TW tires on 17x8–17x9 wheelsBiggest single lap-time gain.
- 2Suspension & brakes
Suspension and brakes
- Coilovers or a matched spring/damper packageControls the soft factory body roll.
- Larger-rotor brake kitFor fast tracks and long sessions.
- 3Power & aero
Power last
- Intake, exhaust, tune or forced inductionThe ND2 is already well matched to its chassis; add power only once heat and brakes are handled.
Common classesSCCA Solo 2026: C Street (ND1/ND2 incl. RF, 2016–25), A Street Touring (2016–26), C Street Prepared. Mazda's Global MX-5 Cup is the professional one-make series for the ND.

Estimates from a simplified point-mass lap simulation of MX-5 Miata ND (incl. ND2) (2,330 lb, 155 hp) on a fictional circuit, with generic effects for each upgrade category. Good for comparing options on the same car, not for predicting your lap time. Real results depend on the driver, the exact parts, the track and the conditions. Durability starts lower on this car because of its known issues: heat.
