Time attack

Time attack is a timed competition where drivers set their fastest lap, usually with limited traffic, and classes are ranked by best time.

Also called: time trial, track time trial

Time attack is a competitive format that sits between HPDE and wheel-to-wheel racing. Drivers go out on track, often with spacing between cars, and try to set the fastest single lap they can. Results are ranked by best lap, usually in classes defined by car modifications and tires.

Because there is no wheel-to-wheel combat, risk is lower than in racing, but the pressure is real. You often get a limited number of laps or sessions, and conditions change as the day warms up. Tire preparation and finding a clear lap are as important as raw speed.

Entrants typically need more safety equipment than at HPDE, and some experience at earlier events. The biggest mistake is over-driving on the first flying lap; build up and leave margin.

Why it matters

Time attack turns lap time into results, so consistent, clean laps matter more than one heroic attempt.
