Autocross
Autocross is a timed event where one car at a time drives a short course of traffic cones, usually in a large parking lot or airfield.
Also called: autoX, solo, parking-lot racing
Autocross is the most accessible form of motorsport there is. A course of cones is laid out on a big paved area, and each driver takes a turn running it alone against the clock. Runs last roughly a minute, speeds stay mostly in second gear, and hitting a cone usually adds a time penalty, often two seconds.
Because you only get a handful of runs, autocross rewards memorizing the course on the walk-through and committing on the first try. It is a fantastic school for car control: tight slaloms teach weight transfer, and the low speeds and wide runoff make it a forgiving place to discover understeer and oversteer.
Expect to work as well as drive. Most events assign every entrant a shift chasing cones or helping run timing. Newcomers often try to go flat out everywhere and spin or plow through the cones; smooth, early vision to the next gate is faster. A helmet is required and the car gets a basic safety check before you run.
Short runs and soft cones make autocross a low-cost, low-risk way to learn the limit of grip before you take that skill to a road course.
