HPDE
HPDE (high performance driver education) is a structured, non-competitive track event where drivers learn on track, often with an instructor.
Also called: high performance driving education, DE, driver education
HPDE events put everyday enthusiasts on real race circuits in a controlled, educational setting. Drivers are split into run groups by experience, novices often ride with an in-car instructor, and there is a classroom element. There are no winners and no official results: the point is to learn car control and track craft safely.
Passing is tightly controlled. Most groups only allow passing on designated straights, and only after the car in front gives a point-by. Novice groups often prohibit passing in corners entirely. Rules, flags and procedures are explained in the drivers' meeting, which is mandatory.
Your first event will mostly be about learning the line, reading the flags and getting comfortable in traffic. Bring a helmet that meets the organizer's standard, have the car checked for leaks, worn pads and loose items, and arrive with an open mind. Speed comes later, from consistency.
HPDE is the safest, most structured way to learn high-performance driving, and it keeps that learning off public roads.
